Pomos

The first village of any size, 20km east from Polis, is POMOS. It straggles along the main road around an attractively rocky bay, and although there’s a tiny boat haven, several restaurants, and a small natural history museum (in the Municipal Hall), you’re only likely to stop here if staying in one of the local villas.

Pachyammos

About 5km beyond Pomos is the village of PACHYAMMOS, hard up against the fortifications of the Kokkina Enclave. Its main claim to fame, which attracts coachloads of Cypriots, is the large modern church of Saints Rafael, Nikolaos and Eirini, and within it the shrine of St Raphael, who is reputed to be able to heal the sick and disabled. The church stands on a wide terrace which overlooks the dunes and the beach, and contains several war memorials, including one to members of the National Guard and civilians killed during the Kokkina Incident in 1964. If several coaches arrive simultaneously, the whole terrace and church can become very busy.
